MORTON,
CARLISLE
Stephenson Halliday prepared
a detailed Masterplan for an extension to the built-up area
of Carlisle in the vicinity of Morton. The proposals include
785 dwellings, open space, footpaths and cycle links, a site
for ‘park and ride’and new primary school as well
as commercial and industrial development. A Landscape and Visual
Impact Assessment of the proposals was also carried out by
the practice.
The development is planned on sustainable
principles; alternative transport links, open space provision
and sustainable surface water drainage determined the layout
of residential and employment areas and roads. The open space
network is based on a system of small streams, and enhancement
of stream margins and grassland, together with woodland establishment
improves the nature conservation value of the site.
Client: Smiths
Gore acting on behalf of a consortium of landholders.
