PETTS QUARRY

Stephenson Halliday was commissioned to prepare a planning submission and supporting Environmental Statement for a 15 year extension to Petts Quarry, situated near Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District. The Greenslate from Petts Quarry has a national reputation and is widely used in historically important buildings such as Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and the National Gallery.

The scope of work included geological appraisal, preparation of a scheme of working and progressive restoration and comprehensive environmental assessment plus the detailed preparation of the planning assessment. Key to the successful outcome was the rigorous landscape and visual assessment, with application of 3D computer modelling to achieve a sympathetic restoration strategy, effectively mitigating the potential effects of the proposed scheme.

The proposed extension was widely supported by statutory consultees with planning consent granted by the Lake District National Park Authority.
