ROOSE QUARRY, BARROW IN FURNESS
Roose Sand Quarry is situated adjacent to the major gas terminal in Barrow in Furness which processes gas from the Irish Sea. Burlington Resources (Irish Sea) Ltd are currently developing further gas resources in the Irish Sea and have commenced the construction of a third gas terminal next to the existing terminals. The gas terminal construction site incorporated part of Roose Sand Quarry reserve area. The initial phase of the construction programme provided a level construction site in a very short timescale, which required a scheme to extract and remove some 400,000 cubic metres of sand.
Stephenson Halliday advised Burlington Resources on the planning issues, prepared the scheme and planning submission to amend the existing planning consent to ensure the rapid extraction of sand to facilitate early restoration and formation of the construction site. Stephenson Halliday prepared the drawings for the earthmoving contract showing the removal, disposal and stockpiling of the 400,000 tonnes of sand from the site.
