Tendley Quarry, Cumbria

Stephenson Halliday coordinated the environmental assessment and prepared an Environmental Statement to accompany the planning application for a major twenty- five year extension of this limestone quarry. The practice carried out a detailed assessment of the landscape and visual effects of the proposal, which informed the development of the phased method of working and enabled mitigation measures to be designed as an integral part of the quarrying process. The visual effects on sensitive viewpoints within the Lake District National Park were considered, as well as those in dwellings, settlements and routes in the vicinity of the quarry. The impacts of the proposals at several stages of the development were illustrated using digital terrain modelling and computer generated photomontages. A careful planning assessment was carried out to justify the proposal.
