DISTINGTON LANDFILL SITE, WEST CUMBRIA

Distington landfill site is a key facility for the disposal of municipal waste in West Cumbria. Stephenson Halliday has been working with Cumbria Waste Management Ltd to secure the future operation of this landfill site since 2001. The latest application was approved in February 2006 where we submitted a planning application to allow the site to install facilities to manage liquid wastes, including wastes produced off-site. The current practice of disposing of liquid wastes to existing landfill will be banned under the landfill regulations in 2007. This permission will allow the development of facilities to manage this waste without disposal to landfill.

In conjunction with Amey Infrastructure Services we have also recently gained planning approval for a revised site profile. This permission has secured a modest increase in additional landfill capacity and improves the final landform.
