Peter Stephenson

Planning Director
Peter is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1971 with an honours degree in geology. He is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying , Member of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and a qualified geologist. Prior to the formation of Stephenson Halliday, Peter was partner with Stephens Stephenson, environmental planning consultants involved in a wide range of commissions for private and public sector clients.
Peter specialises in mineral and waste planning and the co-ordination of planning submissions with supporting Environmental Statements for other forms of large scale development including renewable energy projects, housing, and commercial development.

Nick Edwards
BSc (Hons) MRTPI
Principal Planner
Nick is Principal Planner with the practice. He graduated from Dundee University with an Honours Degree in Town and Regional Planning in 1987 and is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. On graduating from Dundee, Nick worked at Braintree District Council in their Local Plans section, moving to Aylesbury Vale District Council's Development Control team. In 1990 he moved to Cumbria County Council to take up the post of Senior Waste Planner where he stayed for 14 years.
Nick has extensive planning experience in the field of minerals and waste management as well as general planning matters, including a significant amount of work on wastewater developments. The work he has undertaken has involved the preparation of policy documents, assessment of development proposals, preparation of appeal cases and the preparation and submission of planning applications. He has professional experience in both the public realm and private consultancy; his recent project experience includes submission of a planning application for a waste recycling facility near Carlisle and acting on behalf of various private minerals and waste management companies throughout Cumbria.

Neil Furber

Principal Landscape Architect
Neil is a Principal Landscape Architect with the practice. He graduated from Sheffield University and achieved Chartered Status in December 2001. Neil has worked with a number of leading multidisciplinary environmental practices, including Barton Willmore and RPS Plc. Prior to joining Stephenson Halliday in May 2009, Neil was an Associate and Landscape Team Leader at the Environmental Dimension Partnership, a multidisciplinary consultancy based in the Cotswolds.
Neil has extensive experience across a broad range of projects, including renewable energy, residential, minerals and waste, leisure, commercial and industrial developments. He has acted as a landscape expert witness at Public Inquiries and Informal Hearings for residential, leisure, industrial and waste recycling schemes.

Gary Stodart
Dip in Horticulture, MLD CMLI
Principal Landscape Architect
Gary is a Principal Landscape Architect with over fifteen years experience in landscape and visual assessment, landscape design and landscape planning. He joined Stephenson Halliday in November 2009 after working for six and half years at Entec in Glasgow. Prior to working for Entec Gary worked for W.A. Fairhurst & Partners in Newcastle and also spent four years abroad in Kuala Lumpur working for Arkilandskap on predominantly commercial landscape design projects.
Gary has experience of a wide range of projects in both the public and private sectors including renewable energy, waste, housing/regeneration, highways, minerals, agriculture and commercial. Key to success in these disciplines has been the delivery of projects that meet the client’s requirements on cost efficiency, landscape quality, and timescales.

Derek Howlin
Dip Hort (Dist), MALA
Senior Landscape Architect
Derek obtained a Diploma in Amenity Horticulture from the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin, before graduating from the University of Greenwich in London with a Masters in Landscape Architecture in 2003.
Since he graduated, Derek has gained valuable experience from working in New York with Summerhill Landscapes and more recently with Cunnane Stratton Reynolds and Mullin Design Associates in Dublin.
Derek comes from a horticultural background and has valuable experience in Landscape and Visual Assessment, Masterplanning, Landscape Design and both Hard and Soft Detailed Design. He has worked on a broad range of schemes including infrastructure projects, regeneration, mixed use developments, public open space, residential development and urban design.

Tom
Esslemont
BA (Hons) Industrial Design
Graphic Designer

Tom graduated in 2005 with an Honours Degree in Industrial Design from the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, and following his degree studies he lectured in Product/3D Design.
Joining in 2006, Tom has been specialising in graphic design, 3D Modelling and visualisation, with work involved around the output and publishing of digital media, print and accurate exhibition graphics.
Tom has a good knowledge of Resoft Windfarm software, where his skills are used to produce accurate photomontage visualisations for visual impact assessment and other planning requirements.
Tom has been involved in a wide range of wind energy projects at various scales on behalf of numerous developers, including Green Power, Enertrag UK, TNEI, Wind Prospect, Energie Kontor, and Whirlwind Renewables.

David Bryson

Landscape Architect
David is a Landscape Architect within the visualisation department of Stephenson Halliday. He has recently returned to the UK following a period of 9 years working as an Associate Landscape Architect at SLA Studioland a multinational firm with offices in Houston, Tokyo and Beijing. David has international experience managing projects in the USA, Japan, China, Colombia, Bogotá. Malaysia and Canada.
David led the development of 3D visualisation at SLA and has extensive experience across a broad range of projects including commercial retail, community development, airports, military bases, public spaces, city parks, streetscapes and housing.

Ken Halliday
BSc MPhil MLI
Landscape Planning Director
Ken is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from St Andrews University and obtained a Masters degree in landscape architecture from University of Edinburgh in 1987.
He was formerly Head of Landscape Planning with SGS Environment a multi disciplinary practice with 8 offices throughout the UK, prior to joining Stephens Stephenson as Associate in 1996. Ken has been responsible for leading and co-ordinating the environmental assessment of many large scale development projects, including minerals, waste disposal, transportation and renewable energy. This work frequently involves the application of advanced computer modelling to assist in 3D visualisation and visibility analysis.
He has particular expertise in the environmental assessment of wind energy projects, having undertaken the landscape and visual assessment of some 50 proposed sites throughout the UK.

Kelly Anderson

Principal Landscape Architect
Kelly is a Principal Landscape Architect with
the practice. Originally from America, she graduated from university
in Virginia in 1995 having spent one year studying at Sheffield University. She has worked in the UK with Environs Partnership, during which time she gained full membership of the Landscape Institute and a wide range of experience of housing, power generation and transport projects.
Kelly enjoys the diversity of work that the profession offers, ranging from long term landscape maintenance contracts to the landscape and visual assessments required for large and small projects. She particularly enjoys coordinating the work of diverse environmental disciplines into a fully integrated project scheme, which incorporates mitigation measures as part of the overall design. Since joining the practice, she has worked on quarry scheme designs and had involvement with waste management and renewable energy projects.

Forsythe

Senior Landscape Architect
David is an addition to the design and assessment
team. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University
in 1999 with BA(Hons) in Landscape Architecture, returning
to complete a Graduate Diploma in 2001. He achieved his Chartered
status in December 2004.
Prior to joining Stephenson Halliday David gained
a firm foundation and direction in the profession by working
with consultancies
including Land Use Consultants, Rycroft Associates and Capita
Symonds.
David brings to the team valuable experience
in Landscape and Visual Assessment, landscape design, masterplanning
and
visualisations.
He has worked on a broad range of schemes, including infrastructure
projects, regeneration, mixed use developments, public
open space, historic landscapes and urban design.

Tom is a Senior Landscape Architect with the practice. He has worked with a number of leading multidisciplinary practices including Taylor Young and Mouchel. Tom also has international experience in New York and Sydney, where prior to joining Stephenson Halliday he was Senior Landscape Architect with Clouston Associates. Tom is a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University and achieved CMLI in 2008.
Tom has extensive experience across a broad range of sectors including energy and infrastructure, residential, urban regeneration, healthcare and education. Landscape and visual assessment has been a mainstay of Tom’s career where he has worked on a range of schemes from energy and waste to complex urban redevelopment schemes.

Ian Ibbotson
Ba (Hons) Dip LA CMLI
Principal Landscape Architect
(Visualisation and Digital Media)
Ian is a Principal Landscape Architect within the practice. He has supported many multi-disciplinary practices throughout the UK with visualisation and digital media work in his own company, New Visual Solutions Ltd, founded in 2000. He provided visualisation training for many multi-disciplinary companies throughout the UK and developed add-on tools for 3D Studio Max modelling and animation software for infrastructure and environmental projects.
New Visual Solutions was incorporated within the practice in early 2009. Ian manages the practice’s visualisation and digital media capability supporting the minerals, waste, energy, landscape and visual assessment programmes of work. He ensures accurate visual representations for projects are professionally informed and high quality and also manages the visualisation service offered to other practices. Outputs include planning and design visualisation, digital compositing, animation, video editing and computer, DVD or web-based presentations. Ian’s remit is to continually develop this capability and to offer clients the most up to date visualisation and digital media services.

Elaina Carmichael

Graduate Landscape Architect
Elaina recently joined the practice as a Landscape Architect having graduated with a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Sheffield University in 2009. Having spent a year working at Wardell Armstong LLP, Elaina gained experience in a wide range of landscape projects including quarry restoration jobs, LVIA work, public realm improvement projects, design development and implementation work, and planting scheme projects. She was also heavily involved in public exhibition and consultation work and the production of tender documents and capability statements. She has proficient IT skills and worked on Sketchup models of design proposals, detailed AutoCAD, Photoshop and hand drawn drawings for planning applications and technical contract drawings.
Since joining Stephenson Halliday Elaina has been involved in a number of renewable energy projects and LVIA work and hopes
to embark on the Pathway to Chartership.

Nicky
Blackwood
Practice Manager
Nicky is the Practice Manager, dealing with
the administration, accounts and invoicing of the practice. Before
joining Stephenson Halliday, Nicky worked as Office Manager for
a firm of Architects and has previously held similar positions
in both the Legal and Charity sectors.
