Peter Stephenson

Planning Director
Peter is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1971 with an honours degree in geology. He is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying , Member of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and a qualified geologist. Prior to the formation of Stephenson Halliday, Peter was partner with Stephens Stephenson, environmental planning consultants involved in a wide range of commissions for private and public sector clients.
Peter specialises in mineral and waste planning and the co-ordination of planning submissions with supporting Environmental Statements for other forms of large scale development including renewable energy projects, housing, and commercial development.

Nick Edwards
BSc (Hons) MRTPI
Principal Planner
Nick is Principal Planner with the practice. He graduated from Dundee University with an Honours Degree in Town and Regional Planning in 1987 and is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. On graduating from Dundee, Nick worked at Braintree District Council in their Local Plans section, moving to Aylesbury Vale District Council's Development Control team. In 1990 he moved to Cumbria County Council to take up the post of Senior Waste Planner where he stayed for 14 years.
Nick has extensive planning experience in the field of minerals and waste management as well as general planning matters, including a significant amount of work on wastewater developments. The work he has undertaken has involved the preparation of policy documents, assessment of development proposals, preparation of appeal cases and the preparation and submission of planning applications. He has professional experience in both the public realm and private consultancy; his recent project experience includes submission of a planning application for a waste recycling facility near Carlisle and acting on behalf of various private minerals and waste management companies throughout Cumbria.

Kelly Anderson
BLA Virginia MLI
Principal Landscape Architect
Kelly is a Principal Landscape Architect with
the practice. Originally from America, she graduated from university
in Virginia in 1995 having spent one year studying at Sheffield University. She has worked in the UK with Environs Partnership, during which time she gained full membership of the Landscape Institute and a wide range of experience of housing, power generation and transport projects.
Kelly enjoys the diversity of work that the profession offers, ranging from long term landscape maintenance contracts to the landscape and visual assessments required for large and small projects. She particularly enjoys coordinating the work of diverse environmental disciplines into a fully integrated project scheme, which incorporates mitigation measures as part of the overall design. Since joining the practice, she has worked on quarry scheme designs and had involvement with waste management and renewable energy projects.

David
Forsythe
BA(Hons) Dip LA MLI
Senior Landscape Architect
David is an addition to the design and assessment
team. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University
in 1999 with BA(Hons) in Landscape Architecture, returning
to complete a Graduate Diploma in 2001. He achieved his Chartered
status in December 2004.
Prior to joining Stephenson Halliday David gained
a firm foundation and direction in the profession by working
with consultancies
including Land Use Consultants, Rycroft Associates and Capita
Symonds.
David brings to the team valuable experience
in Landscape and Visual Assessment, landscape design, masterplanning
and
visualisations.
He has worked on a broad range of schemes, including infrastructure
projects, regeneration, mixed use developments, public
open space, historic landscapes and urban design.

Derek Howlin
Dip Hort (Dist), MALA
Senior Landscape Architect
Derek obtained a Diploma in Amenity Horticulture from the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin, before graduating from the University of Greenwich in London with a Masters in Landscape Architecture in 2003.
Since he graduated, Derek has gained valuable experience from working in New York with Summerhill Landscapes and more recently with Cunnane Stratton Reynolds and Mullin Design Associates in Dublin.
Derek comes from a horticultural background and has valuable experience in Landscape and Visual Assessment, Masterplanning, Landscape Design and both Hard and Soft Detailed Design. He has worked on a broad range of schemes including infrastructure projects, regeneration, mixed use developments, public open space, residential development and urban design.

Ken Halliday
BSc MPhil MLI
Landscape Planning Director
Ken is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from St Andrews University and obtained a Masters degree in landscape architecture from University of Edinburgh in 1987.
He was formerly Head of Landscape Planning with SGS Environment a multi disciplinary practice with 8 offices throughout the UK, prior to joining Stephens Stephenson as Associate in 1996. Ken has been responsible for leading and co-ordinating the environmental assessment of many large scale development projects, including minerals, waste disposal, transportation and renewable energy. This work frequently involves the application of advanced computer modelling to assist in 3D visualisation and visibility analysis.
He has particular expertise in the environmental assessment of wind energy projects, having undertaken the landscape and visual assessment of some 50 proposed sites throughout the UK.

Liz Ashburn
Dip LA MLI
Principal Landscape Architect
Liz is Principal Landscape Architect with the practice. She graduated from Leeds Polytechninic in 1972, subsequently working with a number of leading landscape architecture practices, including Brian Clouston and Partners, SGS Environment and Casella Science and Environment.
Liz has extensive experience in a broad range of work, including housing masterplanning, leisure, commercial and industrial development, co-ordinating environmental assessment projects and detailed landscape design. She has carried out feasibility studies for river restoration, urban greenways, restoration of historic urban parks and landscape improvements in trunk road corridors.
Liz is a member of the discussion group on sustainable issues convened by the Landscape Design Trust, on behalf of the Landscape Institute. Personal interest in the conservation of distinctive regional landscapes has been reinforced by a period of service on the committee of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Landscape Trust.

James Robinson
BEng (Hons) MSc
Senior CAD/IT Manager
James graduated from Nottingham Trent University
with an Honours Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering
in 1988, and from The University Of Teesside in 1992 with an
MSc in 3 Dimensional Computer Aided Graphical Technology Applications.
On graduating from Teesside, James worked for Sony Psygnosis
in Liverpool and Chester, building 3D computer environments.
James specialises in 3D computer modelling for a wide range of projects, in particular wind energy developments. He has expert knowledge in the application of WindFarm Resoft software applied to site design and visualisation in addition to the more advanced software to assist in photomontage production and animation. He has assisted in the design / landscape and visual assessment of some 20 wind energy projects on behalf of a range of developers including AMEC Wind, Force 9 Energy, Green Power and Wind Prospect.

Tom
Esslemont
BA (Hons) Industrial Design
Graphic Designer
Tom graduated in 2005 with an Honours Degree
in Industrial Design from the University of Central Lancashire
in Preston, and following his degree studies he has been lecturing
in Product/3D Design.
After lecturing, Tom was keen to join private practice and
has recently been added to the graphical design side of business,
and will be specialising in visualisations and CAD. Tom is
keen to assist the practice at a variety of levels, but with
a key involvement in the drawings and visualisations aspect
of landscape assessments.

Nicky
Blackwood
Practice Manager
Nicky is the Practice Manager, dealing with
the administration, accounts and invoicing of the practice. Before
joining Stephenson Halliday, Nicky worked as Office Manager for
a firm of Architects and has previously held similar positions
in both the Legal and Charity sectors.
