Planning Director

Peter is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1971 with an honours degree in geology. He is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying , Member of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and a qualified geologist.   Prior to the formation of Stephenson Halliday, Peter was partner with Stephens Stephenson, environmental planning consultants involved in a wide range of commissions for private and public sector clients.

Peter specialises in mineral and waste planning and the co-ordination of planning submissions with supporting Environmental Statements for other forms of large scale development including renewable energy projects, housing, and commercial development.

Mary Campbell

Technical Director

Prior to joining Stephenson Halliday as Technical Director, Mary headed up the northern planning team at Entec, based in Newcastle. Focusing mainly on minerals, waste, energy and infrastructure projects, her clients included Tarmac, Northumberland Estates, Banks Developments, UK Coal, Scottish Resources Group and Northumbrian Water. She worked with Tarmac to secure the allocation of their sites within development plan documents and on the extension to Howick Quarry in Northumberland. Her working relationship with Banks Developments includes planning applications and Environmental Statements for Wolsingham Steelworks, Rusha Surface Mine, Armistead windfarm and Elvet mixed use scheme in Durham. She advised on planning strategy and project managed the Shotton Public Inquiry resulting in a successful outcome.

Mary has prepared the Minerals and Waste Development Plan Documents for the Tees Valley Authorities, acted as key planning advisor to the South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership on their procurement of waste management facilities and worked with Harworth Estates on the regeneration of old colliery sites in Ellington and Lynemouth in Northumberland.

Kelly Anderson
BLA Virginia MLI

Principal Landscape Architect

Kelly is a Principal Landscape Architect with the practice. Originally from America, she graduated from university in Virginia in 1995 having spent one year studying at Sheffield University. She has worked in the UK with Environs Partnership, during which time she gained full membership of the Landscape Institute and a wide range of experience of housing, power generation and transport projects.

Kelly enjoys the diversity of work that the profession offers, ranging from long term landscape maintenance contracts to the landscape and visual assessments required for large and small projects. She particularly enjoys coordinating the work of diverse environmental disciplines into a fully integrated project scheme, which incorporates mitigation measures as part of the overall design. Since joining the practice, she has worked on quarry scheme designs and had involvement with waste management and renewable energy projects.

Gary Stodart
Dip in Horticulture, MLD CMLI

Principal Landscape Architect

Gary is a Principal Landscape Architect with over fifteen years experience in landscape and visual assessment, landscape design and landscape planning. He joined Stephenson Halliday in November 2009 after working for six and half years at Entec in Glasgow. Prior to working for Entec Gary worked for W.A. Fairhurst & Partners in Newcastle and also spent four years abroad in Kuala Lumpur working for Arkilandskap on predominantly commercial landscape design projects.

Gary has experience of a wide range of projects in both the public and private sectors including renewable energy, waste, housing/regeneration, highways, minerals, agriculture and commercial. Key to success in these disciplines has been the delivery of projects that meet the client’s requirements on cost efficiency, landscape quality, and timescales.

David Forsythe

Senior Landscape Architect

David is an addition to the design and assessment team. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1999 with BA(Hons) in Landscape Architecture, returning to complete a Graduate Diploma in 2001. He achieved his Chartered status in December 2004.

Prior to joining Stephenson Halliday David gained a firm foundation and direction in the profession by working with consultancies including Land Use Consultants, Rycroft Associates and Capita Symonds.

David brings to the team valuable experience in Landscape and Visual Assessment, landscape design, masterplanning and visualisations. He has worked on a broad range of schemes, including infrastructure projects, regeneration, mixed use developments, public open space, historic landscapes and urban design.

Elaina Carmichael
BA (Hons) MLA LMLI

Graduate Landscape Architect

Elaina recently joined the practice as a Landscape Architect having graduated with a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Sheffield University in 2009. Having spent a year working at Wardell Armstong LLP, Elaina gained experience in a wide range of landscape projects including quarry restoration jobs, LVIA work, public realm improvement projects, design development and implementation work, and planting scheme projects. She was also heavily involved in public exhibition and consultation work and the production of tender documents and capability statements. She has proficient IT skills and worked on Sketchup models of design proposals, detailed AutoCAD, Photoshop and hand drawn drawings for planning applications and technical contract drawings.

Since joining Stephenson Halliday Elaina has been involved in a number of renewable energy projects and LVIA work and hopes to embark on the Pathway to Chartership.

Ruth Holiday
BSc. (Hons) Dip MLA LMLI

Graduate Landscape Architect

Ruth has recently joined the practice after graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2010. She has spent a year working at Pegasus Environmental LLP; she has gained experience on a wide range of Landscape projects. This included large scale residential sites, industrial units, public parks, golf courses, historic parklands, and various hedgerow and tree surveys. Her work encompassed LVIA work on residential, quarry restoration, telecommunication and renewable energy schemes. She has had experience in the design development, planting schemes and management plans. She has proficient IT skills working on Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Sketch-up, Adobe Suite and ArcGIS, as well as hand drawn planting plans.

Ruth has since joined Stephenson Halliday and gained experience in a number of renewable energy projects and LVIA work, and is currently working on the Pathway to Chartership scheme.

Charlotte Dean

Year Out Graduate Landscape Architect

Charlotte recently joined Stephenson Halliday as a year out Graduate. Over the next year she will be involved in a range of projects including LVIA work, renewable energy projects, visualisation and general landscape design work. She has proficient IT skills including AutoCAD, Photoshop and InDesign.

Charlotte graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a BA (Hons) in Landscape Architecture and will be returning there next September to complete a PG Dip and MA in Landscape Architecture.

Ken Halliday
BSc MPhil MLI

Landscape Planning Director

Ken is a founding partner of the practice. He graduated from St Andrews University and obtained a Masters degree in landscape architecture from University of Edinburgh in 1987.

He was formerly Head of Landscape Planning with SGS Environment a multi disciplinary practice with 8 offices throughout the UK, prior to joining Stephens Stephenson as Associate in 1996. Ken has been responsible for leading and co-ordinating the environmental assessment of many large scale development projects, including minerals, waste disposal, transportation and renewable energy. This work frequently involves the application of advanced computer modelling to assist in 3D visualisation and visibility analysis.

He has particular expertise in the environmental assessment of wind energy projects, having undertaken the landscape and visual assessment of some 50 proposed sites throughout the UK.

Nick Edwards
BSc (Hons) MRTPI

Principal Planner

Nick is Principal Planner with the practice. He graduated from Dundee University with an Honours Degree in Town and Regional Planning in 1987 and is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. On graduating from Dundee, Nick worked at Braintree District Council in their Local Plans section, moving to Aylesbury Vale District Council's Development Control team.   In 1990 he moved to Cumbria County Council to take up the post of Senior Waste Planner where he stayed for 14 years.

Nick has extensive planning experience in the field of minerals and waste management as well as general planning matters, including a significant amount of work on wastewater developments. The work he has undertaken has involved the preparation of policy documents, assessment of development proposals, preparation of appeal cases and the preparation and submission of planning applications.   He has professional experience in both the public realm and private consultancy; his recent project experience includes submission of a planning application for a waste recycling facility near Carlisle and acting on behalf of various private minerals and waste management companies throughout Cumbria.

Nial Horsburgh
MLA CMLI

Senior Landscape Architect

Nial is a Chartered Landscape Architect with over six years of experience in professional practice. His project experience is focused on Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) and includes a variety of project sectors including; renewable energy, commercial infrastructure, residential and minerals. Nial’s role typically extends from inception to completion, from baseline analysis and consultation with the local authority / statutory consultees, through to site survey, viewpoint photography, and production of the final written assessment.

Nial has considerable experience working within multi-disciplinary teams including planners, ecologists and archaeologists. Nial also has experience in landscape design within the healthcare, education, government, residential and parkland sectors, where Nial has provided an input at the various work stages of the design process, including initial site appraisal, conceptual design, detailed design, as well as the production of working drawings, schedules and specifications.

Crawford Greenfield

Manager – Visualisations and Graphics

Crawford joined Stephenson Halliday in January 2012 and brings nearly 17 years professional experience in graphics and print production to the practice, along with over 7 years’ experience and development in graphics and visualisations for wind farms.

Crawford’s role at Stephenson Halliday encompasses management of and responsibility for all visualisation and technical output. He is experienced in the production of graphics, photomontages and technical illustrations for all kinds of submissions including environmental statements, public inquiry graphics, landscape and visual impact assessments, public exhibitions and tenders.

Crawford has key expertise in such software as Resoft Windfarm, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Professional and Illustrator, CorelDraw and MapInfo Professional.  He has attended Scottish Natural Heritage seminars on photography, photomontage production and their use in wind farm visualisations and has extensive experience in site photography and data collection.

Over the years Crawford has been involved in various wind energy projects for clients including RES UK Ltd, EoN; SSE Renewables, ABO Ltd, Force 9 Energy and Scottish Power Renewables.

Tom Charrier

Senior Landscape Architect

Tom is a Senior Landscape Architect with the practice. He has worked with a number of leading multidisciplinary practices including Taylor Young and Mouchel. Tom also has international experience in New York and Sydney, where prior to joining Stephenson Halliday he was Senior Landscape Architect with Clouston Associates. Tom is a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University and achieved CMLI in 2008.

Tom has extensive experience across a broad range of sectors including energy and infrastructure, residential, urban regeneration, healthcare and education. Landscape and visual assessment has been a mainstay of Tom’s career where he has worked on a range of schemes from energy and waste to complex urban redevelopment schemes.

Tom Esslemont

Tom graduated in 2005 with an Honours Degree in Industrial Design from the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, and following his degree studies he lectured in Product/3D Design.

Joining in 2006, Tom has been specialising in graphic design, 3D Modelling and visualisation, with work involved around the output and publishing of digital media, print and accurate exhibition graphics.

Tom has a good knowledge of Resoft Windfarm software, where his skills are used to produce accurate photomontage visualisations for visual impact assessment and other planning requirements.

Tom has been involved in a wide range of wind energy projects at various scales on behalf of numerous developers, including Green Power, Enertrag UK, TNEI, Wind Prospect, Energie Kontor, and Whirlwind Renewables.

Ann Gore

Practice Manager

Ann is the Practice Manager, dealing with the administration, accounts and invoicing of the practice. Before joining Stephenson Halliday, Ann worked as a Customer Care Manager and also has previous experience of working within Accounts and Administrative roles.

In addition, Ann has a Foundation Degree in Arboriculture.

Jessica Crowther

Administrative Assistant

Jessica joined Stephenson Halliday after studying a BTEC in E-Business at Furness College. She helps in dealing with administration, accounts and invoicing.

Jessica has also had previous experience of working in construction after completing a Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
