Wax Lyrical: British Manufacturing, Exports & Energy

Wax Lyrical based at Lindal in Furness is the biggest candle manufacturer in the UK, and competes in the international market, with overseas sales forming a significant part of the business.

The production of candles is an energy intensive process and electricity is needed at the factory 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year. Consequently energy is a significant part of their costs.

Stephenson Halliday Ltd secured planning permission for a wind turbine on land adjacent to the factory on appeal following refusal of the planning application by South Lakeland District Council. The turbine is now in the process of construction. On completion, the supply of electricity from the turbine can be made at a rate below existing market costs. This will immediately reduce manufacturing costs and in the longer term provide a ‘cushion’ against future electricity price rises for a business which is heavily energy dependant.

Ultimately, this helps secure a total of 193 jobs – a significant contributor to the local economy.
