Landscape design and maintenance services for Peak District (East) VIP Project

Client

National Grid/Morgan Sindall

Type

Undergrounding 132 kV infrastructure

Details & Location

Peak District, UK

Status

Submitted for planning approval

RSK group is working alongside Morgan Sindall on a sensitive project within the Peak District to underground 2 km of an existing overhead line as part of National Grid’s Visual Impact Provision (VIP) project funded by Ofgem. RSK Landscape (now part of Stephenson Halliday) has fulfilled the role of Landscape Clerk of Works.

The undergrounded cables are to follow the Trans Pennine Trail, resulting in a loss of vegetation. As a result of stakeholder and public engagement, it was agreed to carry out soil and shrub translocation and seed harvesting to maintain the special habitat. We have sought to retain and reinstate key features such as waterfalls, swales and original drystone walls.

The design will ensure effective delivery of the 10% biodiversity net gain National Grid has committed to. This is achieved by using a detailed biodiversity net gain delivery plan designed by one of our sister companies, RSK Wilding.
