Stephenson Halliday Ltd was commissioned by West Cumbria Mining Ltd to submit notifications of intention to develop for four exploratory boreholes in West Cumbria. These boreholes are the first stage of a programme to determine the quality and extent of the coal bed which extends throughout the St Bees area of West Cumbria and offshore. Based on existing data West Cumbria Mining believes there is over 750 million tonnes of coking coal resources across the area. Coking coal is used for the production of steel and not used in thermal powers stations to produce energy. Following the submissions made by Stephenson Halliday Ltd, Cumbria County Council has confirmed that the boreholes do not require express planning permissions.
